The War of the Realms

Logo and Cover Designs

Project Details

THE WAR OF THE REALMS was Marvel’s big event series of 2019. It was written by Jason Aaron and drawn by Russell Dauterman. There were six core issues with known tie-ins to THOR, AVENGERS, and many other titles and mini-series. I developed the concept for the covers, designed the logo, and created icons for each of the 10 Realms that exist in the Marvel Universe.

See the cover gallery below.

Event Details & Tie-In Books

Over the course of Jason Aaron’s four-year run on THOR, Malekith, the king of the Dark Elves, had been attempting to conquer each of the Ten Realms (which include Earth/Midgard and Asgard). When THE WAR OF THE REALMS kicks off, he has control of them all – except one. In THE WAR OF THE REALMS #1, Malekith and his allies and armies invade the last realm standing: Earth.

THE WAR OF THE REALMS is about Thor and the heroes of Earth — including but not limited to the Avengers, Daredevil, the Fantastic Four, Spider-Man, Namor, and Captain Marvel — rallying to stop him.

Below are a few of the events tie-in books and mini-series for which I created logos and treatments.

Runes of the Realms Designs

A few of my concepts involved using symbols for each of the 10 realms in the logo. After doing a little research, I could not find any established icons for each realm. So instead, I created a set using the first letter of each realm written in Norse runes as inspiration. I wanted them to feel “ownable” to the Marvel Universe’s version of the Realms but also have ties to the mythology. Instead of showing up out of the blue, maybe they’ve been in the background for the last 50 something years of Thor comics. It’s been nice to see the fans and writers embrace the designs and work them into the story.
